Saturday's Dinner

Last Saturday I encountered some nice looking, fresh Ahi tuna at the grocery store, so I decided to make a dish I had enjoyed at a local Japanese restaurant (my new favorite Yapona). It's called Tuna Tataki. Basically it is a lightly seared, crusted tuna steak served on a bed of dressed veggies like tomato, onion, and avocado. They served theirs with a bed of grated daikon which was nice but I couldn't find daikon so I used a recipe from the Food Network that uses a bed of leaf lettuces instead.

I reduced the soy sauce in the dressing because I find most American recipes use too much and it is overly salty. I used about a tablespoon, and it turned out just about perfect. The crust on the tuna was very nice and while the tuna could have been higher quality (it was almost devoid of fat), it was fresh and had a very nice, mild flavor.

Tuna Tataki at my house!

As I promised. Food reviews...

The first thing I figured I would start with is the yummy Back to Nature Banana Nut bar I have with breakfast each day. They're super yummy, about the same price as any other granola bar or oatmeal breakfast item and they're good for you, with lots of oatmeal, whole wheat flour, rasins, walnuts and bananas. No artificial gunk you don't recognize either. Just real ingredients you would have in your home anyway. I always just take them out of the wrapper and pop them in the toaster oven for a few minutes of heating so they are like they just came out of the oven (cause they did).

I also have an actual banana with breakfast each morning, natures perfect breakfast fruit. I love those things.

I also have one of these Dannon All Natural Yogurts. I think the blueberry is my favorite, or maybe peach. It's hard to say because they are all good. They actually taste like fruit and real yogurt instead of the weird stuff you get in the usual 'healthy' yogurts with the artificial sweetners and flavoring. I hardly ever drink milk, not that I don't like it, I just have a hard time using it fast enough for it to not spoil so it's kind of a waste to buy. So I eat a lot of yogurt and I take a calcium supplement. Since proper calcium intake may help prevent diabetes and other 'sugar processing' problems, plus I hate breaking my arms and stuff. I did that enough as a kid.

Arggghh.

Ok now for the third time.

I made some updates to Drupal and it is giving me headaches. It keeps deleting my content before I post it.

I try again now.

Maybe this one will be the one.

Anyway, here's the scoop. My brother Adam and his wife Erica had a baby. It's a boy. Check it out. My brother James and his wife Chevon are also having a boy sometime in the near future. Sweet monkeys. There are a lot of kids around on Sunday nights at the big family dinner now with more to come.

My brother Jordan and his wife Amanda had their second by back in July of last year. I was too lazy to update this thing then. Here's a link to some pics.

As for me, no I'm still not married. Hence no kids. I have, however, made a biggish change in my life this year. Since the end of last April I have lost almost 80 lbs. I've been exercising almost every day and eating much better than I have since my mom was making me food every day.

It hasn't been as hard as I expected since the first part of making new habits and all that. Since about last July it has been mostly just a matter of sticking to my guns and not cheating myself. Probably the hardest part is finding good food to eat at social gatherings. Most people love to eat out (I do too at the right places) and most restaraunt food is not conducive to weight loss or even mildly healthy. I've basically sworn off junk food and fast food. It just isn't worth it for me anymore. It makes me feel gross and it feels like I am taking a step backwards if I eat that stuff.
